Towards pro-active rehabilitation planning of water supply systems

چکیده
Making decisions on the renewal of a water distribution system is essentially a balancing act between system performance and costs. In water distribution systems three types of failure are observed, structural, hydraulic and water quality. Frequencies of these failures together with failure consequences define failure risk. Risk can thus be mitigated by a reduction of failure frequency, i.e., renewal, and/or limiting failure consequences. Life-cycle cost comprises risk (or the expected consequences of failure), cost of renewal and reduction of failure consequences. Sound decision should minimise this life-cycle cost, but to achieve this goal one must be able to quantify risks. In this paper the critical elements of a holistic view of water supply systems are identified and these are discussed in relation to the current state-of-practice and future research directions towards the pro-active planning of their renewal. While various models are available to analyse water main breaks, commensurate efforts need to be dedicated towards analyses of water quality and hydraulic failures.

The importance of reliable supply is increasing with supply chain network extension and just-in-time (JIT) production. Just in time implications motivate manufacturers towards single sourcing, which often involves problems with unreliable suppliers. If a single and reliable vendor is not available, manufacturer can split the order among the vendors in order to simultaneously decrease the supp...

ERP systems provide information management and analysis to industrial companies and support their planning activities. Background and purpose: Livestock exploitation and grazing is the most important human activity, the choice of which depends on various factors. The importance of how to manage customary rangeland systems in recent decades has made it one of the challenges of rangeland management in the country. Rangelands need principled management and planning for existing resources (water, soil and plants) a...

Through the lens of supply chain management, integrating process planning decisions and scheduling plans becomes an issue of great challenge and importance. Dealing with the problem paves the way to devising operation schedules with minimum makespan; considering the flexible process sequences, it can be viewed as a fundamental tool for achieving the scheme, too. To deal with this integration, t...
